Die Traisen ist einer der größten Flüsse Niederösterreichs. Beim Bau des Donaukraftwerks Altenwörth von 1973 bis 1976 wurde die Traisen um 7,5 km verlängert und mündet heute flussab des Kraftwerks. Das Flussbett verlief geradlinig und gleichförmig durch das Augebiet zwischen Traismauer und Zwentendorf. Dank dem Projekt LIFE+ Traisen wurde der begradigte Verlauf aufgebrochen. Die Mündung der Traisen in die Donau wurde komplett neu geschaffen.
